Almost every application form in India asks for a percentage, while most boards and universities now report a CGPA. Converting one to the other looks simple, but using the wrong formula can put the wrong number on an official form.
Why there is no single formula
A CGPA is an average of grade points, and each board or university maps marks to grade points differently. That is why the conversion factor changes from one institution to another.
Common formulas
- CBSE (Class 10, CGPA scheme): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
- VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- Anna University and several others: Percentage = CGPA × 10
So a CBSE CGPA of 8.4 becomes 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%, while the same 8.4 under VTU becomes (8.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%.
Check your mark sheet first
Many universities print the conversion rule on the mark sheet or in their academic regulations. If they do, use that rule — it is the one employers and admissions offices will accept. If an application form tells you how to convert, follow the form.
When not to convert
If a form has a field for CGPA, enter the CGPA exactly as printed. Converting when you do not have to only adds a chance of error.
